Wonderful World of Email

The AAVSO maintains a number of e-mail services that distribute information on a wide variety of topics. You may subscribe/unsubscribe to most of these lists from this web page yourself. Our email services include...

  1. Observations
  2. Notification of Unusual Stellar Events
  3. Newsletters
  4. Discussion Groups

1. Observations

We can send you the most recent AAVSO variable star observations on whatever star you choose, at whatever magnitude cutoff you choose, delivered in a format of your choice and at a frequency that, yes, you choose yourself. Basically this is a VERY customizable service that allows people to alert themselves when a certain star reaches a certain magnitude or just to monitor a star(s) of their choice.

2. Notification of Unusual Stellar Events

Special Notice

A short email that is sent out by an AAVSO staff member to notify observers of rare stellar activity as soon as we are made aware of it. It is used to notify observers of a star going into outburst or some other unusual occurrence that requires immediate attention. Some times it is used to announce observing campaigns or special requests for observations. This is a quick and brief email sent out when time is of the essence.

Alert Notice

This is often a more detailed and more formal description of the event that was announced via Special Notice. It is used to notify observers of stellar activity, requests for observations, and more.

3. Newsletters

Eyepiece Views

A newsletter published to support our observers' visual observing program with lists of new targets, new observing program ideas, and information that is both interesting and helpful. Guest writers contribute on anything from book reviews to tips on observing variable stars. A potpourri of useful information!

CCD Views

A newsletter published to support our CCD Observers. This publication is currently on hiatus until further notice.

4. Discussion Groups

AAVSO Discussion groups are open to the public and points made and discussed within them do not necessarily reflect the views and policies of either AAVSO, its staff or members. To sign up for one of the discussion groups, follow the apppropriate link and follow the instructions.

Archives are also available via the links below.

Some of the archives for Feb 2006 - March 2007 were lost in a crash. We have restored most of them here.
